چکیده
A•STRACT.--In December and January of the winters of 1990-91, 1991-92, and 1992-93, blood samples were collected from 52 Red-railed Hawks (Buteojamaicensis) and 91 American Kestrels (b•lco sparverius). Twenty-five blood parameters were measured, including white blood cell components, plasma enzyme activities, and plasma chemistry concentrations. Interspecific comparisons were made to identify species specific differences pertinent to health assessment. American Kestrels had a higher incidence of hematozoa infection, higher alkaline phosphatase and acetylcholinesterase activities, and higher plasma cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid and sodium concentrations. Red-tailed Hawks had higher white blood cell concentration and eosinophil count estimates, aspartate aminotransferase and butrylcholinesterase activities, and a higher plasma albumin concentration.

Nutritional condition and serum biochemistry for free-living Swainson's Hawks wintering in central Argentina.
We assessed the nutritional condition and established reference values for serum chemistry parameters in a long distance migrant bird of prey, the Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni), wintering in central Argentina. We analyzed serum concentration of urea, uric acid, cholesterol, and triglycerides and assessed age and sex related differences in these parameters. A body condition index was obtaine...
متن کاملThe effects of temperature and artificial rain on the metabolism of American kestrels (Falco sparverius).
The effect of rainfall on the metabolism of birds is poorly understood. We measured the metabolism as rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) of four male and four female American kestrels (Falco sparverius) using open-circuit respirometry. We measured VO2 during the spring at ambient temperatures (Ta) of 5, 10, 15, and 25 degrees C in air without rainfall and with simulated rainfall of 2.5 (low rainf...

The Caspian trout is an endangered and quite vulnerable fish, considered for a natural protection program in the southern area of the Caspian Sea. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) are toxic substances, which induce oxidative stress, not to mention other pathophysiological states. The toxicity of nanoparticles on fish needs more characterization for short- and long-term effects. Thus, the p...

During a recent survey for West Nile virus in wild birds around the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, Imperial County, California (Dusek et al. 2010), we captured a female American Kestrel (Falco sparuerius) with a severe bill deformity (Figure 1). The kestrel was captured on 9 March 2006, at 08:45, approximately 0.25 km south of the intersection of Wiest and Lindsey roads (33 0 0...
